Project 6- Proposal

Proposal 1- The Service Industry

Description-

The goal of this photo essay would be to capture the life of restaurant workers. I work at a fine dining restaurant downtown and thought it would be interesting to capture what happens behind the scenes, the friendships that are there and what happens when the shift ends. I also think the added layer of COVID19 and all the rules/procedures we have to follow adds an interesting layer. My plan was to focus on a handful of employees (all from different positions) before, during and after the shift while also including interactions with coworkers. I would not be able to capture customer service as i do not think my managers would approve but I really wanted to focus on the activities behind what the customers see anyway. I think this could be an interesting topic. Fine dining restaurants operate differently than most and many people do not know what goes into it. My hope would be that viewers could gain an appreciation of what happens behind the scene and see the family-like bond the staff has. The service industry is not always considered a life long job. At fine dining places, many of the servers and cooks work there as their life long trade. I would hope to show the skill, love and hard work that they put into their service and the bond we all have with each other.

Shot List-

  • The process of getting ready for work. We have a specific uniform and standard for appearance that we must meet for shifts.

  • Pre-shift. There are a number of tasks that happen before we open for dinner service. Every position at the restaurant has things they must prepare and get done before service.

  • During shift. There are a number of positions that work together to provide flawless service. For example, just for the front of house there are Hosts, Service assistant, Servers, Food runners, Bartenders and Managers. For the back of house there are Line cooks, pantry cooks, Dishwashers, Chef and sous chef. I would try to capture photos of the back and front.

  • Closing. Photos of closing procedure.

  • After work. Coworkers typically all go out for drinks or food after to talk about the shift and relax. This would be a great time to highlight relationships between staff.

Proposal 1-The  Artistic Process

Description-

Capturing the process of painting. I want to capture everything that goes into the painting process. This would include buying supplies, inspiration, the painting process, the finished product and cleaning up. I chose this idea because I think there is a lot that goes into painting and the artist's process that the finished product does not always highlight. Ideally the end essay will convey the joy and frustration that comes with art and creating something. I will shoot one of my friends as he goes through the process of painting. I will do at least 2 art pieces he creates, if time allows and I shoot more than 2 I will. I’ll follow him around for the day and shoot while he works. We are good friends and I take photos of him often (he has been in two of our previous projects) so my presence should not interfere with the process or make him feel uncomfortable. As someone who is not gifted in drawing or painting, I want to show off the skill and dedication of those who can.

Shot List-

  • Preparation. I will follow him around as he goes to pick up supplies and sets up his space to paint.

  • Inspiration. I will try to capture what is the inspiration for his painting or what he is attempting to create.

  • Painting process. I will photograph while he is painting, the different techniques/colors/styles he is using. A few photos will probably come from this part as I feel it’s important to the photo essay.

  • The finished product. I will capture as he finishes and show the finished product. I will aim to try to get his natural reaction/emotions about how he feels about his painting.

  • The clean up process. I will take pictures as he packs up and is cleaning the space.
