Project 6- Progress Photos

  1. First Progress Critique: Wesley critiques Hannah C.

As I look at Hannah’s photos I see a common environment, maybe a restaurant. Most of the people in the pictures seem to be going about their duties. There are no group shots but two that represents social interaction, as in conversation and a three-cup toast. The photos are all in a mid-evening light, which adds a really nice effect to the overall setting. All the pictures have nice framing, I particularly like the drinking glasses in the forefront and the man in the background. The framing of the photos is rectangular and balanced, it creates a clear view for each of the persons or objects (focal points). The focal points change from photo to photo to give an appearance of a person walking through a restaurant noticing the activities of staff and or patrons. The photos all seemed to have dark tone to them which may just represent the design of the photographer. The darker tones throughout the shoot suggests the typical restaurant environment and a calming mood. There was not much of color within any of the pictures, it makes you think of a classic black and white photo set. The photo of the handheld glasses merging was a good expression of unity and contrast. The contrast was the color of their hands, the glasses and the dark background. The unity was the special way they brought the glasses together. Hannah’s pictures use nice range of light and shadows to produce contrast within each frame. The POV seems to have captured the overall ingredients of a calm but festive mood. I would say that the subject matter blends well together, with the motion and flow of content. I think that Hannah made some good choices and she should continue her composition of images with symbolic pieces that illustrate visual rhythm.
